Quilting a Vintage Quilt Top from Gwen's Quilts

In last week’s blog post I explained how I prepared a not-so-flat vintage quilt top for finishing. If you didn’t catch it, be sure to read it first. No worries, I’ll wait.

Basic plan

Now that I had a nice flat quilt top, I could start thinking about the quilting. I wanted to ignore the seam lines in an effort to hide all the added sashing. This would make the tulips come forward and float on the background.

I planned to stitch-in-the-ditch around each set of tulips and do minimal quilting within the tulips so that they ...

Preparing a Vintage Quilt Top from Gwen's Quilts

I’d like to share with you my process of preparing a vintage quilt top for finishing. Each top is different and will require different things of course, but this one is my latest finish and it has an interesting story and was extra challenging.

Choosing the vintage quilt top

I loved the colors in this top the minute I saw it. And one of my favorite flowers is the tulip. Those things drew me to choose it. I did notice some fullness in the blocks, but since I have experience with quilting hand pieced vintage tops, I had confidence ...

Odds and Ends: All the Amazing Things I Forgot to Tell You This Week from Cheeky Cognoscenti

Hello, my lovelies, and Happy Friday!  We made it to the end of another week!  Yay!

So, you know that drawer in your house, probably in your kitchen, that is full of random things that don't belong anywhere else?  That is your frame of reference for today's blog post.  I have a "junk drawer" full of loose ideas in my head that I meant to share with you in earlier posts.  For instance:

A Ball of Feed Sack String, Next to a Golf Ball

Feed Sack String!!!

In a recent post about a vintage quilt repair that I ...

Textile Archaeology: Exploring a Vintage Quilt Through Dissection and Repair from Cheeky Cognoscenti

Yesterday morning, while drinking my latte, I read through a string of National Geographic articles about recently discovered hominid remains in the Rising Star cave system of South Africa.  On my giant desktop monitor, I clicked through slide shows of exploration scientists cramming themselves and their equipment into narrow channels of rock as they gingerly worked to free fragile, ancient fossils that would shed new light on our understanding of early human history.

And then, I headed up to my studio, and began a delicate excavation of my own, the beginning of ...

The Blazing Star Block from Quilt Collection M.

I did it again: I quilted along in the Classic and Vintage Series of Fatquartershop. I so love the Vintage blocks and I also love the outcome of the blocks.

For a few years (since 2017)  I have been quilting along with Fatquartershop and their blog The Jolly Jabber. It is always in their Classic and Vintage Series that I have sewn the blocks. This year was the sixth time. Again I really like the pattern: It is the Blazing Star. Please check all the other versions. The pattern is free. There are many more interesting blocks on the blog ...

Antiques from Crazy Quilter on a Bike!

Do you have days when you feel like an antique? It happens to me from time to time, but thankfully very rarely!

I don't often visit antique shops as I never seem to find anything, so what's the point? Last week, I had a chance to pop into one for a few minutes, and I thought, "why not?" Well, I managed to pick up some old photographs for 50 cents each, which is rare in antique shops. BUT I also found a treasure, so I think the timing was meant to be.

Pretty much the first thing I ...

Wednesday's Word:
Let’s continue with the verses from Until We Reach Home by Lynn Austin. As her sisters are hospitalized on Ellis Island, Sofia finds herself all alone waiting for them to recover. Her friend shares yet more Scriptures with her.

So much is happening in our world, in our nation, even in our homes!
Perhaps you are also waiting for loved ones to recover from an illness/addiction.
Perhaps you are also feeling abandoned by God.
Perhaps you are putting on a brave, cheerful face all the while feeling all alone in your own private pain, your ...

The Beastly Y-Seam Block Has a Name: Cathedral Window by Nancy Cabot, 1933 Chicago Tribune from Cheeky Cognoscenti

When I was recreating, resizing, recoloring and revising the Moda Modern Building Blocks Sampler in EQ8 Quilt Design Software, swapping out some of the blocks for others in my EQ Block Library, I didn't pay much attention to the information contained in the software "notecard" for each block.  After toiling away at all of these Y-seams, however, I was curious about where this block I'm making came from and I went back to my software to find out.

Vintage Double Wedding Ring Bed Runners Finished and Delivered! from Cheeky Cognoscenti

Remember that Double Wedding Ring UFO that I told you about back in August?  A woman had contacted our Charlotte Quilters' Guild looking for someone who could finish an in-progress Double Wedding Ring quilt that she found in her mother's attic. She had a tub of assembled circular wedding ring blocks, a small section of a handful of blocks sewn together, and lots of tiny wedge pieces cut out.  Based on the client's recollection of when her grandmother had grown too ill to sew, as well as rough dating of the fabrics in the blocks and the techniques ...

Kaffe Fassett in Bath, Part 2 from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

The American Museum and Gardens in Bath, UK, opened its doors in 1961 for the first time at Claverton Manor. It is the only museum outside the United States dedicated to the American arts. Unfortunately, the manor part of the museum was closed for Christmas decorating, but thankfully the Kaffe Fassett exhibit was held in another building, so much to may delight, we were able to see the unique combination of old and new quilts. As promised, here are the rest of the quilts from the exhibit. We hope you enjoy them!

Kaffe Fasset in Bath, Part One from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

A couple of weeks ago, I (Kara) wrote about a lovely quilt shop, Poppy Patch, over in England, with a little teaser of the Kaffe Fasset exhibit at the American Museum in Bath, UK. Wait no more, because today and next week, I will be sharing some of the amazing antique quilts and the Kaffe Fasset reproductions of those quilts.

This was one of my favorite exhibits ever. For me, it was the best of both worlds—antique quilts and Kaffe Fassett fabrics. While Teri and I don't usually work with really bright colors, there is a "bright" side ...

Kovals Antique Quilt Exhibit- Houston from Humble Quilts

Joe and Mary Koval generously shared an amazing array of antique quilts in Houston! Here's a sampling.

This was actually one of my favorites. I can't get enough of this setting!!

If I had to make 14 diamonds meet in the center, I'd never have a quilt!
It's okay to cut up a toile. Still makes a pretty effective and fun quilt.

I'm so glad I don't worry about which direction my stripes run!

As precise looking as this applique is................

Still Crazy... from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

When pondering the title of this post, a number of familiar songs came to mind, and I (Teri) have a bit of Paul Simon, Heart, Van Morrison, Queen, and Patsy Cline bouncing in my head as I write. (I guess that dates me, doesn't it?!) Kara's Crazy Mittens post last week reminded me how much fun we have playing with stitch combinations when doing a crazy quilt-style project. A couple of months ago, Kara and I found a group of three "Victorian crazy quilts" in an online auction and thought we would bid on the lot. To our ...

Antique Bed Turning and Quilt Show from Humble Quilts

Last Friday on my way to the race I left town early so I could enjoy a quilt show in Hood River!
I enjoyed an antique quilt bed turning the most.

I absolutely loved the applique birds on this one.

Not quite sure about the corners on this one.

Sometimes the simplest ones can be the sweetest.

Pretty sure these are old blocks, newly set and quilted.

The next few were a few of my new favs.

But first..... Thank you for all the well wishes on the race. We needed it!

Because I live on the dry side of the mountain (High desert) we don't get a lot of color and the trip to Hood River was amazing!

Because I would be leaving the start line at 5:15AM I wanted to see the route I'd be walking.

Too bad I passed this the following morning  in the dark with heavy rain!!
